What to expect at the beach
Praia da Boca do Rio is a medium-sized beach of about 150 metres in length. The beach is rather wide though. On both sides of the beach there are dramatic cliffs. The area around the beach is undeveloped and there are no modern buildings in sight. There is almost nothing here.
Part of the beach consists of rocks. There are not many rocks in the water though, which makes it a good beach for swimming. Just beware that there are no lifeguards here. Not far from the coast you can actually explore the shipwreck of a French ship that sank in 1759 after a battle. This activity is popular among divers.
Literally, Praia da Boca do Rio translates as river mouth beach. This is because you can find the river mouth of the Ribeira de Budens river on the east side of the beach. The river flows through a valley into the sea. If you follow the river inland, you can occasionally spot otters swimming here. In addition, you can see many birds around this area. Sometimes, the water of the Ribeira de Budens river doesn’t fully reach the sea and creates a small freshwater lagoon near the beach.

A long time ago, the Romans used this area to cultivate rice and other produce. Boca do Rio used to be an important Roman villa. Boca do Rio is a well-known archaeological site from the Roman era in the Algarve. You can actually still see traces of frescoes and mosaics here.
Hiking
There are some great hiking trails near Praia da Boca do Rio, both to the east and to the west. If you walk east, you should walk towards the Fort of Almádena. It is also possible to walk west, towards Salema. During this cliff walk you have a beautiful panoramic view over the beach of Praia da Boca do Rio and the surrounding area. Highly recommended.
