Official nude beaches
Praia do Homem Nu (Tavira)
Praia do Homem Nu is an official nude beach in the Algarve since 1996. Literally, the name translates to Beach of the Nude Man. It is located on the southwestern end of Ilha de Tavira, west of Praia do Barril. To go here, go to Praia do Barril and walk 2 kilometres to the west (to the right side when looking at the sea). This walk takes about 25-30 minutes. Praia do Homem Nu itself then stretches for about 3 kilometres. Its size makes this one of the best nude beaches of the Algarve. There is absolutely nothing here: no infrastructure and no lifeguards. Only beautiful white sand and the sea. Due to its remoteness, there are few people coming here. But the ones who do, will surely enjoy this precious beach.
Praia das Adegas (Odeceixe)
Praia das Adegas is one of the three official nude beaches in the Algarve, since 2004. The beach is located on the west coast of the Algarve, in Odeceixe (municipality of Aljezur). Praia das Adegas is surrounded by high cliffs, which gives it a remote and secluded feel. Moreover, there are no houses and restaurants to be found; it really is unspoiled. Also, there are few people coming here. Fortunately, there is a parking lot nearby. Just park your car and access the beach via a long wooden staircase. However, the waves of the Atlantic Ocean here can be very strong. As a result, Adegas is the perfect nudist beach for people who love being in the wild and rough nature.
Ilha Deserta (Faro)
Since 2011, Ilha Deserta is the third official nude beach of the Algarve. Ilha Deserta literally translates as Deserted Island. This island near Faro consists of many kilometres of remote beach. Even in the height of summer, there will only be a handful of people. The only way to get here is by boat. There are no permanent inhabitants living on the island. You will find only one building, which is a restaurant. The beach of Ilha Deserta has pure white sand and the water here is exceptionally clean. The nudist area can be found on the western side of the island, about 30 minutes walking from where the ferry arrives. Go here for the ultimate peaceful paradise experience.
Unofficial / tolerated nude beaches
Praia do Canavial (Lagos)
Near Lagos there are many special beaches to be found, known for their beautiful rock formations. One of them can also be enjoyed nude. Praia do Canavial is not of the the official nude beaches in the Algarve, but naturism is allowed here. It is a small beach that is not easily accessible. However, when you have entered, you don’t want to leave. The beach is located between Ponta da Piedade and Praia de Porto de Mós. Enjoy the crystal clear water and the majestic rock formations. Feel one with mother nature at this amazing nude beach.
Meia Praia (Lagos)
Meia Praia is the largest beach in the region of Lagos and very popular among locals and tourists. On the eastern side of the beach, close to a natural bay called Ria de Alvor, you can find a section of the beach where naturism is allowed. This part of the beach is about 400 metres wide. Moreover, this clean and sandy beach is the perfect tanning spot that you can combine with cool refreshing dips in between. Beware that even in the summer, the sea water can be fairly cold in this part of the Algarve. Overall, great beach to visit.
Praia da Bordeira (Carrapateira)
Another amazing beach on the west coast of the Algarve where nudism is tolerated is Praia da Bordeira. It is located near the town of Carrapateira. This unofficial nude beach in the Algarve is a rugged force of nature, with over 3 kilometres of uninterrupted sand, garnished by limestone cliffs and extensive ancient pine dunes. The wind and strong waves attract surfers and nature focused tourists. It is your ideal choice for a day away from mass tourism.
Praia do Beliche (Vila do Bispo)
The perfect nudist beach has soft sand, a secluded feel and is easily accessible. In the western part of the Algarve you will find a beach that ticks all these boxes: Praia do Beliche. This golden beach is surrounded by impressive cliffs and is located near the town of Sagres. While this is not an official nude beach, naturism is tolerated here. The strong tides make it a popular spot among surfers and the cliffs provide perfect shelter for sun lovers. Praia do Beliche is considered to be one of the best beaches in the region. A naturist beach not to be missed!
Praia do Zavial (Vila do Bispo)
Praia do Zavial in Vila do Bispo is a beach of great natural beauty. The combination of cliffs and nature gives this beach a unique feel. The beach has good conditions for surfing and other water sports. Moreover, nude tanning is tolerated here on the eastern section of the beach. The beach and sea of Praia do Zavial are commended because of its cleanliness. A great beach for sun seekers who want to tan everywhere.
Praia das Furnas (Vila do Bispo)
Praia das Furnas is a small beach in the municipality of Vila do Bispo. On the beach you can find several caves and grottoes in the rocks, which are nice to explore. The best thing: naturism is allowed here, although it is not one of the official nude beaches in the Algarve. However, there is little infrastructure. There are no lifeguards or toilets around. In short, make sure to bring your own food and drinks.
Praia Grande (Silves)
Praia Grande (also known as Praia Grande de Pêra) officially belongs to the municipality of Silves. The beach is located between Armação de Pêra and Praia dos Salgados in Albufeira. The beach and sea are both exceptionally clean. Moreover, near the beach you can find a beautiful lagoon, where you can see a variety of wildlife. Naturism is tolerated on Praia Grande de Pêra and you can see plenty of naturists here. It’s popular with international naturists, especially in summer.
Bonus: Ilha da Armona (Olhão)
Ilha da Armona is a beautiful island near the coast of Olhão. The beach on the island stretches for many kilometres and nudism is tolerated on most of it. However, there are relatively few naturists in reality here. But if you want to enjoy kilometres of beach in your birthday suit, Praia da Armona is in fact a great choice.

Thank you for the list. Really looking forward to visit Praia do Faro with my wife as we are staying right there 🙂
Great! Enjoy your holiday there 🙂
Thank you very much!
No problem, enjoy your holiday 🙂
It is wonderful you have so many naturist beaches in one area of Portugal. In Canada there are only two official clothing-optional beaches in the whole country, with very few unofficial ones. I hope to visit very soon. Thanks very much for all the information and the photographs of these beautiful beaches.
No problem, come visit the Algarve soon 🙂
