Praia da Baleeira – the #1 guide
Praia da Baleeira is one of the Algarve’s most authentic beach experiences. Set right next to the fishing harbour of Sagres, it’s a place where the region’s working life meets the Atlantic. This is not a polished postcard beach: it’s real, rugged, and full of character. Fishing boats glide in and out, the scent of salt and diesel lingers in the air, and the vibe is more local than touristy. If you’re looking for a beach with personality and a direct line into Sagres’ maritime roots, this is it.

What to expect at the beach
Praia da Baleeira is located next to the fishing harbour of Sagres. The beach overlooks the harbour and the bay of Sagres. It is a small beach of only about 100 metres in length.
From the air, you can see it’s the strip of sand right next to the harbour.
Looking at the harbour, the beach is on the left side.
The location next to the harbour makes the water not so clear as on other beaches nearby, because there is pollution from boat traffic to some extent. While you are on the beach, you will see many boats go in and out of the harbour. Other than that, the beach is relatively peaceful. If you stay near the village of Sagres, this beach might be a nice way to spend your day.
The area on the left side of the beach is less pleasant, due to the presence of small rocks. There are less rocks on the rest of the beach, although you will occasionally still find rocks between the sand. This makes the sand on this beach not the finest of the Algarve.
The beach is quite sheltered, but it can get quite windy sometimes. On windy days, Praia da Baleeira is not the best beach for sunbathing. People that do want to enjoy the sun usually prefer other beaches nearby. For example, Praia do Martinhal is not very far (a 15 minute walk) and is in many ways a better beach.
Our tips
Want to experience Praia da Baleeira like a local, not a tourist? These are the tips we would give our best friends:
- Avoid swimming near the harbour mouth. While tempting, the harbour waters near the mouth have the most boat traffic and lowest visibility. If you want a refreshing dip, stick to the middle stretch of the beach or walk 10 minutes to Praia do Martinhal for crystal-clear water.
- Plan a two-beach combo. Praia da Baleeira is best for short stays and quiet contemplation. Pair it with a long afternoon at Praia da Mareta or Praia do Tonel nearby for swimming and sunbathing to get the best of both worlds in a single day.
- Visit the fish auction at the harbour. Most tourists miss this completely. Time your visit for the late afternoon and you can step inside the small auction house to see the day’s catch being weighed, sold, and packed. It’s raw, real, and unforgettable.
- Watch the local fishermen repair nets by the docks. Just behind the harbour, you can often see fishermen quietly mending their gear. It’s a fascinating glimpse into traditional coastal life that’s quickly disappearing elsewhere in the Algarve.
- Don’t skip the Memmo Baleeira terrace bar. Even if you’re not a hotel guest, head to the bar at Memmo Baleeira for a drink with panoramic ocean views. It’s just a few minutes from the beach, and most visitors never realize it’s open to the public.
The harbour
The fishing port itself is worth a visit. It is not that big, but nice to walk around after lunch or dinner.
The harbour has a nice view, overlooking the colourful fishing boats and the Atlantic Ocean.
In front of the port you can see the same limestone islets that you can see from Praia do Martinhal.
You will see plenty of fishing boats coming and going, and you can see the arrival of the catch of the day.
You can also go inside the harbour building. There is a fish auction inside, which is very interesting to see.

There is a restaurant right behind the harbour, called A Tasca. The restaurant overlooks the harbour and specializes in Portuguese seafood. The setting of the restaurant is lovely, the food is good and the service is nice.
