What to expect at the beach
Praia das Adegas is a relatively small beach, stretching for about 200 metres in length. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs, which gives the beach a secluded feel. These cliffs also protect the beach from the wind. Adegas beach is part of the Costa Vicentina natural park, which is known for its wild and rugged nature.
Praia das Adegas is located in a small cove just south of Praia de Odeceixe. The beaches are separated by a high cliff. During low tide you can walk around the cliff, so you can reach the other beach. However, this is not posssible during high tide. You can see that on the picture below. Adegas is the smaller beach on the right side.
During high tide, the only way to reach Praia das Adegas is through a footpath on the cliffs, right next to the viewpoint with the car park. The footpath consists of a steep trail followed by a wooden staircase. Even though this is the main access point to the beach, it almost feels like a hidden access point.
During high tide Adegas beach actually becomes very small. There is not much sand left during high tide. It is best to visit this beach during low tide. Furthermore, there is another hidden cove south of the beach, that can be reached during low tide. That area is also a small beach, which is great to explore during low tide.
The water here can be quite rough and the current can be strong, so be careful when swimming. However, the waters of Praia das Adegas and Praia de Odeceixe are popular among surfers.
The beach is usually quite empty. In summer there are usually only a handful of people on this beach, mainly families, couples and surfers. Outside summer months, the beach is often deserted. Remember: don’t sit right underneath the cliffs. There always is the danger of rocks falling.
Don’t miss the fabulous cliffs views. When standing on the cliffs on top of the beach, you have a great view over the Atlantic Ocean.
Nude beach
Praia das Adegas is one of the three official nude beaches in the Algarve. It has been a naturist beach since November 2004. Praia das Adegas is the only nude beach on the west coast of the Algarve and also the northernmost nude beach of the region. The beach is very quiet and offers plenty of privacy. It is loved by naturists from all over Europe.
Our tips
Want to experience Praia das Adegas like a local, not a tourist? These are the tips we would give our best friends:
- Time your visit with the tide. Adegas almost disappears at high tide, so check tide charts before you go. Arrive at low tide to enjoy the widest stretch of sand and even explore the hidden cove south of the beach.
- Don’t sit under the cliffs. The cliffs are stunning but can be unstable. Locals know to set up closer to the middle of the sand for both comfort and safety.
- Stay for sunset. Few people stick around for sunset, but you should. The west-facing cliffs turn golden, and the beach empties to near solitude, giving you a private show over the Atlantic.
- Combine with Odeceixe village. After a day on the sand, head into Odeceixe for dinner. Tiny restaurants serve authentic seafood and regional dishes at prices far better than Algarve’s hotspots.
- Visit the hidden cove. South of Adegas lies a smaller cove that’s only accessible at very low tide. It feels like a private beach-within-a-beach, and chances are you’ll have it all to yourself.
How to get there & parking
The easiest way to move around in the Algarve is by car. If you don’t have one, make sure to rent a car. It is relatively easy to reach Praia das Adegas. When coming from Aljezur, take the N120 up towards Odeceixe. Continue to follow the signs towards the beach of Odeceixe. Praia das Adegas is located about 3 kilometres west of the town of Odeceixe. When arriving at Praia de Odeceixe, continue on the same road for about 500 metres until you see a car park next to the viewpoint on top of the cliff. You can park your car for free here. Next to this viewpoint you will find a pathway down to the beach. Another option to reach Praia das Adegas is by walking south from Praia de Odeceixe during low tide.
